4 Characteristics of Great Website Content

As an Internet user, you know how frustrated you feel when you click on a Google result that looks relevant to your search, only to discover that the page is nothing more than junk. To stop people from using SEO techniques to promote spammy or useless pages, Google has developed two tools, one of which is called Panda. Learning a little bit about Panda can help you to understand why maintaining fresh content is so important for improving your page’s search results.

Pandas Aren’t As Cute and Cuddly as You Might Imagine
In an effort to boost the page ranks or their websites, some people neglected high-quality content and focused on spammy, below-the-belt SEO techniques. Google created a tool called Panda to root out useless content. Panda is updated monthly to ensure that more relevant, more consistently refreshed websites are rewarded with better search results.

At the same time, if you aren’t keeping your content refreshed, then you may see your search engine rankings take a major hit. To avoid what insiders call the “Panda Pounce,” refresh your content regularly while keeping these four keys in mind

1.  Relevant
To achieve the best rankings on Google, produce content that is relevant to your business niche or to your area of expertise. When you’re evaluating the relevance of your content, think of three main ideas:

  • Search queries. What search queries would lead the Google user to your page? Think in phrases instead of in head terms, or keywords. However, don’t stuff your text with key phrases in hopes of getting Google’s attention. Make sure that the writing flows naturally.
  • User intent. Users may be looking for your site by name, or they may be looking for information about your area of expertise. Alternative, the user may be seeking a transaction with your website. The key is to fulfill multiple user intents when constructing your content.
  • Context. If you own a roofing company, and your customer searches for “energy efficient metal roof Dallas,” then your customer isn’t just looking for providers of metal roofing. Your customer wants to know how metal roofing can increase energy efficiency. When you write about your topics, make sure that you consider them from multiple angles to present them in the context of your customer’s search queries.

2.  Original
Obviously, plagiarism is not okay with Google. If you steal large sections of text from other websites, then your website could be penalized. Originality also means that you aren’t simply rewording content that already exists. Your pages need to offer something that other pages don’t if you want them to stand out in the rankings.

3.  Well-written
Google searches reward good grammar, proper punctuation and correct spelling. Write using short paragraphs and break up your content with tools like headings, bullet points and numbering. This type of writing is important because it helps readers to stay focused on your content. If it’s easy for Google to index, then it’s probably also going to be easy for your readers to understand.

4.  Informative
A gentle “call to action,” or an explanation of how your services can meet the needs of your customers, is good business. However, blatant self-promotion at the expense of providing good information will not help your search result rankings. Make sure that your content is useful without being overly promotional. Anything that sounds too “sales-y” could alienate not only Google, but also your potential customers.
