Social Media Marketing vs Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

A research firm has found that, in comparison with 2009, there has been an increase of more than 67 percent in social media marketing jobs across the globe, which seems to give the indication that this is a fast expanding field. In comparison search engine marketing and search engine optimization jobs only registered an increase of 33% during the same period.

Many will wonder what this means: This simply translates to the fact that social media jobs are more in demand as compared to search engine marketing or search engine optimization jobs, which shows that many employers are more willing to hire staff for social media positions. In fact, it can be safely said that the social media market is expanding at well over twice the rate as search engine marketing. It would also be more interesting for those aspiring for social media jobs to know that they can expect a much higher pay scale as compared to search engine jobs. This may be attributed to the fact that this is a fast growing marketing, and skilled employees will be able to command much higher salaries than the much more saturated market for search engine specialists. This also shows that companies are willing to pay much more money on social media marketing than on search engine optimization. If you are planning to find a job in the social media world, this is great news for you.

So how can you use this information to establish a career for yourself? Look at which company rules the roost when it comes to social networks and platforms. Without a doubt the king of the castle would be Facebook with close to 1 billion members and counting. This can help you in two main ways:

  1. First of all it shows you that Facebook is most likely the most effective marketing tool among all the other social networks. There would be no other reason for marketers to invest so much time and effort into marketing on Facebook.
  2. Secondly, this also tells you that your competition would be focusing on Facebook, so you might want to consider switching over to other social media platforms where you might get better conversion rates simply due to the fact that there is much less competition as far as these particular social networks are concerned. Once you that the market for social media marketing via Facebook is such a hot commodity, anyone looking for a job would be well advised to highlight their proficiency on Facebook when they are looking for social media jobs.

If you take a look at past trends,  you may have found the search engine marketing was traditionally believed to be the best way to drive traffic to your website. However, since major search engines like Google have constantly been revamping their algorithms and are increasingly including social media presence as part of their ranking systems, it looks like social media marketing is well on its way to take over search engine marketing as the prime marketing tool. For this reason, if you haven’t been active on social media in the past, there’s no better time to start than now.
